Filipino Gossip Culture

 Filipino Gossip Culture

Gossiping is a favorite hobby of Filipinos, where a gossiper is referred to as a "Marites." Most people would find their lives boring and meaningless without daily gossip. Gossips are everywhere in our neighborhood, on social media platforms, at work, etc. Everyone loves to spill the tea, especially on social media, where Filipinos create memes, share humorous images, produce animated GIFS, and personalize templates using quotes, teleserye scenes, movies, and even the hottest topics from the lives of influencers and artists.

Regardless of whether the conversations are negative or positive, gossiping comes so naturally and frequently happens almost unintentionally to make it more interesting or break up the routine of normal activities. However, gossip isn't always about the negative; it's become a pastime in which we learn to vent our emotions and improve our social wellbeing, which may serve to create bonds and connections between us. We share, we learn, and we care where we can improve and develop ourselves.

The problem with Filipino gossip is that it typically contains envy. Most people enjoy gossiping because it gives them a sense of authority and relieves them. Sadly, some Filipinos are closed-minded; they would rather accept false information since it fits their worldview. We frequently fail to realize that we've crossed the line without considering the consequences of what we say. We allow negativity and judgment to grow in our brains by gossiping about others without taking into account their feelings. The victim of gossip is more likely to experience sadness, suicidal thoughts, heightened insecurity, low self-esteem, and other mental health issues. In other words, gossip brings undue humiliation to an innocent individual. Remember, there are always three sides to every story.
